Outdoor Sockets and Garden Power: Doing It Once, Doing It Right

Outdoor power is one of the most requested small jobs we do, for pressure washers, garden lighting, hot tubs, office pods and Christmas lights. It is also one of the most frequently done badly, usually by drilling straight through a wall and mounting a standard socket in a plastic box.

What a compliant outdoor socket looks like

• IP66-rated weatherproof enclosure with a sprung, gasketed lid
• 30mA RCD protection, either at the board or integral to the unit
• Correct cable entry from below or via a sealed gland, never an open top entry
• Mounted at a sensible height, clear of splashback and standing water
• Isolation available indoors so it can be switched off when not in use

Running power down the garden

For a shed, garden office or pod, the correct method is steel wire armoured cable, buried at a minimum depth of 500mm with warning tape above, or clipped along a fence at height with UV-stable fixings. Ordinary twin and earth in a plastic conduit is not acceptable and will be coded on any future EICR.

The cable is sized for the load and the run length, a 30-metre run to an office with a heater and two monitors is a very different calculation to a 6-metre run to a shed light. Voltage drop matters over distance, and the earthing arrangement often needs converting to TT with a local earth rod for outbuildings.
